NAME BRANDS, REAL MINIMUMS

Name-Brand Merch With Your Logo: Nike, Carhartt, YETI and Stanley (and What It Costs)

When a name brand is worth the premium over a lookalike, what Nike, Carhartt, YETI, Stanley and Cutter & Buck cost with your logo, and where the minimums differ.

Someone in HR asks whether the client gift can be a YETI. Sometimes the answer is yes. Sometimes a plain stainless tumbler with your logo does the job, and the person holding it never checks the bottom.

The difference is whether the recipient already owns that brand, and whether they'd notice the swap. Below is what Nike, Carhartt, YETI, Stanley and Cutter & Buck look like with your logo, using live catalog prices. Catalog prices exclude setup and run charges, so add setup; your quote shows it. Each brand sets its own minimum, and that decides which one fits a small budget.

When the name brand earns the premium

Three questions decide it. Does the person already use that brand, or want to? Will the item get carried where other people see it, like a job site, a gym or a video call? And does your logo sit on the brand's own decoration spot without getting squeezed in? If the first two answers are yes, the premium buys you a gift people would have bought themselves. If not, a lookalike is the right buy, and it lets you cover more people.

The lookalike check is simple. Take the 20 oz. Stainless Steel Insulated Tumbler - Everest. It starts at $11.75 a piece, but that price is for 576 pieces. At the 48-piece minimum it's $12.75 each, and the screen print is a $55 setup plus a $50 charge if you need a color match. At 48, that's about $13.90 each before the match, or $14.94 with it.

  • 20 oz. Stainless Steel Insulated Tumbler - Everest: as low as $11.75/unit · min 48.

Now the name brand. The Stanley 30 oz at 24 pieces lands at $39.09 each all-in, with the laser setup included in that math. It's a different size, so this isn't a clean comparison. The gap is the cost of a name the recipient recognizes, and it's only worth paying when they'd notice.

YETI and Stanley: laser on steel, minimums of 6 and 24

YETI is the easiest of the group to order in a small run. The minimum is 6 on both of these pieces. They can't be ordered blank, so the laser setup is a line you have to budget from the start. The imprint areas are the front and back, on the same faces YETI uses for its own marks, and laser engraving is a $60 setup on each. Pick the side for your mark before you approve the proof: the front sits on YETI's embossed side and the back on its engraved side.

  • YETI® Rambler® 20 oz. Tumbler MagSlider™ Lid: as low as $40.65/unit · min 6. At 6 it's $44.65 each, and at 96 it's $40.65.
  • YETI® Rambler® 10 oz. Stackable Lowball with MagSlider™ Lid: as low as $29.00/unit · min 6. At 6 it's $34.00 each, and at 96 it's $29.00.

Stanley starts at 24, which is four times YETI's minimum. The laser setup on the 30 oz Quencher is $55 with $0.80 a piece for the run, and the imprint sits on the handle side, opposite the Stanley logo, in a 1.5-inch by 1.5-inch area.

  • Stanley Quencher H2.O FlowState™ Tumbler 30oz: as low as $36.00/unit · min 24. At 24 pieces, with the laser setup and run, it's $39.09 each all-in.
  • Stanley IceFlow™ 2.0 Flip Straw Tumbler 20oz: as low as $40.00/unit · min 24. Laser and screen print are both listed, centered on the front, opposite the Stanley logo.

For the rest of the steel lineup, see the drinkware page.

Nike and Carhartt: embroidery on apparel, and bigger minimums

Embroidery is the decoration that suits this group. Nike's Dri FIT Classic Polo takes a left-chest and right-chest mark about 4 inches by 4 inches, and the embroidery setup is $59. At 12 pieces the polo is $81.49 each before that setup, so it only fits a small budget when the list is short.

  • Nike Dri FIT Classic Polos: as low as $60.67/unit · min 12. The $60.67 starting price is for 2,016 pieces. At 12 it's $81.49 each.
  • Nike® Sphere Dry Cap: as low as $41.80/unit · min 24. At 24 it's $46.56 each, and with the $50 embroidery setup, $48.64 each all-in. One size fits all.

Carhartt is the heavier buy, and the sizes run S to XL on both pieces. The Gilliam Jacket starts at 36 pieces, and the Duck Traditional Coat starts at 12. Both are listed for embroidery. Pick the size run before the logo, too: both Carhartt pieces list S, M, L and XL only, so a crew that needs anything else needs a different plan.

  • Carhartt Gilliam Jacket: as low as $230.71/unit · min 36. At 36 it's $233.98 each, and the $75 embroidery setup brings it to $236.06 all-in.
  • Carhartt® Duck Traditional Coat: as low as $312.06/unit · min 12. At 12 it's $347.66 each, and the $99 embroidery setup brings it to $355.91 all-in.

Cutter & Buck: one-piece minimums and a cheap fit check

Cutter & Buck apparel lists a minimum of one piece, so you can buy a single polo to check fit and color before you commit to a crew. Order the sample first. The catalog marks the Virtue polo as not stocked on hand, so ask us to confirm the exact color and size before you lock in a number.

  • Cutter & Buck Virtue Recycled Featherlight Pique Mens Polo: as low as $40.00/unit · min 1. Embroidery is listed on the left and right chest and sleeves.
  • Cutter & Buck® 19" Cotton Weekender Duffel: as low as $64.60/unit · min 15. At 15 it's $64.60 each, and with the $55 embroidery setup and $2.50 a piece, it's $70.77 all-in.

The duffel is the better first bag for a corporate event. You can order 15 for a sales team, look at the logo on a real bag, and scale from there, because the setup is charged once per decoration and a bigger run spreads it thinner.

What each brand takes well, and what the setup does at a small run

Match the decoration to the surface. Embroidery is the right call for apparel and caps, and every Nike, Carhartt and Cutter & Buck piece in this post is listed for embroidery. Laser is the right call for steel. The mark is cut into the bottle, so there's no print sitting on top to rub off. The duffel takes embroidery or screen print centered on its front pocket.

Fixed charges hit hardest on small runs. A $60 laser setup on six YETI tumblers adds $10 to each one. A $55 laser setup on 24 Stanley tumblers adds $2.29 each. A $59 embroidery setup on 12 Nike polos adds $4.92 each. Those are fixed charges, which is why the all-in price is the one to compare.

Nothing prints until you approve the proof. Ask for the all-in number at your quantity, not the starting price, because for most of these pieces the starting price sits at a bigger run than your minimum.

Put the all-in numbers side by side for the brands you're weighing, at the quantity you'll actually order. Write down your three answers from the first section before you open the catalog. The choice usually makes itself once the numbers are on the same line.

FAQ

Will people really notice the difference between a name brand and a lookalike?

The people who already own the brand usually will, and that's the reason to pay for it. Everyone else mostly sees the bottle, not the label on the bottom. Decide by the audience, not by how big the logo is.

Why do the minimums differ so much between brands?

Each brand's blanks and decoration run differently. In this post YETI starts at 6 pieces, Stanley at 24, Nike at 12 or 24, Carhartt at 12 or 36, and Cutter & Buck apparel at 1. Check the minimum on the product page before you choose the item.

Can I get a single piece to check fit before the full order?

On Cutter & Buck apparel the minimum is one piece, so yes. For the other brands the listed minimums apply, so ask us whether a sample is possible before you commit to a run.

Which decoration costs the most on a small run?

Usually the setup, because it's a fixed charge spread across fewer pieces. On six YETI tumblers the $60 laser setup is $10 a piece. On twelve Nike polos the $59 embroidery setup is $4.92 a piece.
